Approximately 600 walkers attended the 2016 DSA Global Diabetes Walk which was sponsored by the South African Sugar Association (SASA).

The walk served to promote public awareness about diabetes in November, a national Diabetes Month. Supporting the awareness of diabetes were the KZN Health MEC Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo and Dr Jimmy Mthethwa, KZN DOH Manager for Non-Communicable Diseases who participated in the walk. Close to 2.3 million South Africans suffer from diabetes.

Diabetes can treated by good eating habits, doing exercise and taking prescribed medication.  Contrary to the popular myth, people with diabetes do not need to avoid sugar but it is important to have sugar in moderate amounts. The Nutrition Department of SASA had an exhibition where walkers were given tips on how to manage their diabetes.
